The MWC returns to Barcelona with a great event for this new edition

The next Mobile World Congress will take place from 28 February to 3 March at the Fira de Barcelona exhibition centre on Gran Via in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

The MWC organizers are confident that this year we are going to enjoy a great event during these days in Barcelona. Something more similar to the editions prior to the pandemic, with the help of audiovisual suppliers and suppliers of stage design for trade fairs and congresses.

It seems that we are finally starting to return to normality, although the technology congress will not reach figures like those of 2019. Even so, we are committed to reviving the events sector as soon as possible.

A bit of MWC history for those unfamiliar with the congress

The Mobile World Congress, better known as the Mobile World Congress (or MWC), is the world’s leading annual congress for the mobile communication sector, global technology and I&D platform and is considered the most important in the world in this field.

It has been held annually since 2006 at the Fira de Barcelona exhibition centre and lasts 4 days.

This fair has a great economic impact on the city of Barcelona, contributing more than 400 million euros and creating some 13,000 jobs.

The Mobile World Congress aims to foster international collaboration in mobile wireless communications. It is a space where the largest number of presentations of the latest advances in wireless and mobile communications take place.

It is a place where engineers, scientists and investors in the areas of wireless systems and mobile applications meet and a great opportunity to showcase the latest technologies.

MWC Background for the curious

Since 1990, the GSM Congress has been held for mobile phone technology and organised by the GSM Association. This congress was held in some of the most important European cities until it was established in the city of Cannes until 2006, when it was moved to the city of Barcelona, due to the large growth of the event, which required larger facilities and greater infrastructure.

Before the COVID pandemic, it was not uncommon to exceed 100,000 attendees, and in the last edition, in June last year, the convention was attended by around 20,000 people (practically locals).

The 2020 edition could not take place due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The MWC 2022, a claim for the events sector and its transformation to a hybrid event

Although global mobility restrictions are still a fact of life, the number of attendees is expected to be much higher than last year.

The GMA Association of mobile operators and related companies has claimed that MWC 2022 will occupy three times more space than in 2021. With 1,500 exhibitors from 150 different countries and around 1,000 speakers, many of them face-to-face.

The next MWC will be a hybrid format combining face-to-face events, keynotes and conferences with virtual participation and streaming.

Major brands such as Google, Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia, Vodafone, Deutsche Telecom and many others have already publicly confirmed their participation in this year’s MWC.
